Chapter 4.
Jacob watched Rachel skip from shop to shop, spending barely enough to get through the week.
Despite her purchases all being put on her grandmotherâs card, Rachel certainly wasnât spending much. Something he respected, despite the fact he hadnât explained how their bartering system worked.
âYou know, you could have bought more,â he told her as they walked out of the fourth and last shop.
Sheâd bought the cheapest underwear she could find and seemed embarrassed to be buying them in front of him.
Which to him, was adorable.
âOh, no. I have plenty at home, I donât need any more. And I donât really like spending my grandmotherâs money. Iâve been working since I was sixteen and feel foolish relying on her now.â
He really should have explained better.
âOur system relies very much on a bartering system and balance to the whole pack. Everyone works for their money, and your grandmother has enough to live on for the rest of her life. And yours, if Iâm completely honest.â
âOh.â She frowned for a moment, then a huge smile lit up her beautiful face. âGreatânow I donât feel so bad about getting that second tank top.â
Oh my God, she is so beautiful.
He reached out and cupped her cheek, unable to resist the temptation. And when she leaned into his hand like the caress was all she wanted, his whole body shook with how right being with Rachel was.
He pulled his hand back and cleared his throat with a rough cough. âSorry.â
âOh. Donât be sorry. I like it when you touch me.â
Jacob ran a shaking hand through his hair, his wolf howling happily inside of him.
He knew, unfortunately, that his wolf wouldnât settle down until they had mated. Or she left. Whichever came first.
âSo, you donât have a boyfriend, or someone who will be missing you back home?â
She frowned, the happiness disappearing from her face.
âNo, of course not. I wouldnât have kissed you if Iâd been seeing someone else.â
They turned into her grandmotherâs street and Jacob could feel the eyes of the pack on him.
Could they tell what she was to him? Or were they only interested in seeing what their princess looked like?
Jacob took a deep breath. âShould we talk about that? I mean, for me, the instant attraction between us was...â
How did he discuss this with her without explaining that she was his fated mate?
She glanced down. âYeah, me too. Iâve wanted to kiss you since I first saw you. Which, to be honest, is very unusual for me. I donât go around kissing strange men.â
âOh... well...â Jacob didnât think of himself as strange of course, but a stranger to her, yes, he supposed he was. âIâm glad that you wanted to kiss me enough to step out of your comfort zone. Thatâs a huge compliment. Thank you.â
âUm, it isnât just that,â Rachel said, licking her lips and looking anywhere but at him.
âWhat is it?â
He tightened his fingers into tight fists, feeling the bite of his short fingernails into his palms. He wanted to hold her so badly.
