Chapter 4.

Jacob watched Rachel skip from shop to shop, spending barely enough to get through the week.

Despite her purchases all being put on her grandmother’s card, Rachel certainly wasn’t spending much. Something he respected, despite the fact he hadn’t explained how their bartering system worked.

“You know, you could have bought more,” he told her as they walked out of the fourth and last shop.

She’d bought the cheapest underwear she could find and seemed embarrassed to be buying them in front of him.

Which to him, was adorable.

“Oh, no. I have plenty at home, I don’t need any more. And I don’t really like spending my grandmother’s money. I’ve been working since I was sixteen and feel foolish relying on her now.”

He really should have explained better.

“Our system relies very much on a bartering system and balance to the whole pack. Everyone works for their money, and your grandmother has enough to live on for the rest of her life. And yours, if I’m completely honest.”

“Oh.” She frowned for a moment, then a huge smile lit up her beautiful face. “Great—now I don’t feel so bad about getting that second tank top.”

Oh my God, she is so beautiful.

He reached out and cupped her cheek, unable to resist the temptation. And when she leaned into his hand like the caress was all she wanted, his whole body shook with how right being with Rachel was.

He pulled his hand back and cleared his throat with a rough cough. “Sorry.”

“Oh. Don’t be sorry. I like it when you touch me.”

Jacob ran a shaking hand through his hair, his wolf howling happily inside of him.

He knew, unfortunately, that his wolf wouldn’t settle down until they had mated. Or she left. Whichever came first.

“So, you don’t have a boyfriend, or someone who will be missing you back home?”

She frowned, the happiness disappearing from her face.

“No, of course not. I wouldn’t have kissed you if I’d been seeing someone else.”

They turned into her grandmother’s street and Jacob could feel the eyes of the pack on him.

Could they tell what she was to him? Or were they only interested in seeing what their princess looked like?

Jacob took a deep breath. “Should we talk about that? I mean, for me, the instant attraction between us was...”

How did he discuss this with her without explaining that she was his fated mate?

She glanced down. “Yeah, me too. I’ve wanted to kiss you since I first saw you. Which, to be honest, is very unusual for me. I don’t go around kissing strange men.”

“Oh... well...” Jacob didn’t think of himself as strange of course, but a stranger to her, yes, he supposed he was. “I’m glad that you wanted to kiss me enough to step out of your comfort zone. That’s a huge compliment. Thank you.”

“Um, it isn’t just that,” Rachel said, licking her lips and looking anywhere but at him.

“What is it?”

He tightened his fingers into tight fists, feeling the bite of his short fingernails into his palms. He wanted to hold her so badly.
